14. Store-bought smoothies

A smoothie is a great way to get a good amount of fruits and vegetables and their vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients. The problem is that if we buy one for convenience from a store, chances are there will be some form of added sugar to add sweetness that pleases our palate. Despite the fact that sugar comes in many forms, whether it is honey, agave syrup or maple syrup, it is still sugar, it adds unnecessary calories and does not provide no nutritional value in itself. The answer to this is to create your own! In reality, it's easier than you think; just buy a blender or smoothie like a NutriBullet and you're good to go! Typically, you'll need liquid to use as a base, so water, cow's milk, or dairy-free alternatives like oat milk or high-protein pea milk are all good options.
Then add a banana and berries for added thickness, along with some chopped fruit (frozen works best, strawberries, cherries and melon are our favorites). You could also try a handful of chopped kale if you're brave, or spinach if you want something sweeter. Finally, a dollop of nut butter or yogurt to add protein. Once you mix everything together, you have a tasty and healthy breakfast on the go.
