Officers immediately noticed something inside the apartment. There was a peculiar smell, but they didn't yet know what it was. When they entered Hanna's room, they realized the smell had gotten worse.

Mold was found to be growing behind the bed, behind the closet and in a few corners of the ceiling. Hanna was probably sleepy and sick from the mold slowly spreading throughout the house. Sophie had called 911 because the shedding was toxic, and she could have died if she hadn't.
